1) What types of translations do you offer?
A - Translations from foreign language into Brazilian Portuguese
B - Translations from Brazilian Portuguese into a foreign language.
C - Translations from a foreign language into another foreign language (not including Brazilian Portuguese).
2) Are prices different for each type of translation (foreign-language/Portuguese or Portuguese/foreign language?
Yes. Translating from a foreign language into Portuguese is cheaper than the other way around.
3) What is the difference between a non-certified and a certified translation?
Non-certified translations are the most prevalent type of translation. They comprise all kinds of documents and subject-matters, except for those bearing official status, such as notarial, school, and company incorporation documents, among others, which must be translated by a certified public translator.
Customers can send their documents for translation in electronic format and get their translations back in the same format. They can alter the translation or add text to it, at their own discretion, to better suit their needs.
A certified translation is required for certain types of documents, including birth, marriage, and death certificates; school and university diplomas & transcripts of grades; companies’ articles of association, contracts, and bylaws; among others.
Public translators are certified by the State Board of Trade after passing a strict examination. They have public faith and are authorized by law to translate official documents, including those mentioned above.
Certified translations are printed on paper with the translator’s letterhead, and must contain the number of the translation, the book, and the pages, in addition to the translator’s signature, which must be authenticated by a notary public. It has public faith, and cannot be modified by the customers as opposed to non-certified translations.
4) Are prices different for certified and non-certified translations?
We have a regular fee for non-certified translations. Prices vary a lot. More experienced and qualified translators tend to charge higher prices than inexperienced professionals. Check our Prices link.

5) How is the cost of a translation calculated?
The cost of a certified translation is based on the number of characters or lines in a document. The price is for 1,000 characters without spaces. For documents sent to us in electronic format, the characters or lines are counted using special Character Counting Software. For printed documents, whenever possible, we use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) Software to scan the document and count it using the software mentioned above. In few cases, we count the lines manually (like in the old days). In that case, the cost will be calculated per line of text. Prices are for each 25 lines of up to 55 keystrokes including spaces).
For non-certified translations, the cost is based on the number of words in the original document.
6) Does C.I.I. Idiomas issue an invoice for the service?
For non-certified translations, C.I.I. Idiomas will issue an invoice (nota fiscal) listing the service provided and its price.For certified translations, the law requires that the public translator write a standard receipt (approved by the Board of Trade) containing the name and address of the customer, the number of the translation, the book, the pages, and the translator’s signature.
7) Is it enough to provide a certified translation of documents issued abroad when used for legal purposes in Brazil?
No. Before having the translation done, it is necessary to have the original document legalized by the Brazilian Consulate located where the document was issued.
8) How can I hire professional interpreters?
The first step is to define the language pair, the duration of the event and the place where it will be held. For events lasting up to 1 hour, 1 interpreter will be required. For longer events, it is necessary to hire two or more professionals, who will take turns doing the job. For simultaneous interpretation, the customer should make sure the venue of the event has all necessary equipment, including interpretation booths, microphones, headphones, UHF transmitters, etc. Consecutive interpretation does not require such equipment. For a detailed proposal, the customer should also provide the number of attendees and the subject-matter. The price will depend on all above-mentioned factors.
9) How do the Online Courses work?
Online courses are targeted at people who do not have the time to commute to a school or do not want to take a traditional in-company course.
Students need to download Skype (www.skype.com) or MSN (www.msn.com) and have a webcam installed in his/her computer. This way, both teacher and student can see and hear each other and have the class in real time without leaving home or the office.
We offer different timetables and courses (day-to-day language, language for specific purposes, conversation, etc.)
10) How do in-company classes work?
Before beginning the course, students are interviewed and tested to determine their course level. After that, C.I.I. Idiomas will discuss with them or their companies the type of course that would best suit their needs.
Our courses focus on English/Spanish/Italian/ French/German for daily communication, academic or professional purposes. The vocabulary and context of the classes will be based on the specific area chosen by the student (production, marketing, sales, communication, IT, or general business).
In-company courses offer many advantages, including:
- the student does not need to drive to a school or find parking space;
- the classes are specially designed to help students really use the language when attending meetings, making presentations, and much more!
11) What are the courses like?
As the other services we provide, the classes are customized to better meet students’ needs and expectations.
Through an initial interview with the company, the group, or student, C.I.I. Idiomas will identify the best type of course and tools to use in the classroom. For example, high-intermediate or advanced-level students, who have difficulty to understand native-speakers, can have special video classes to improve their listening skills.
Other students, who want to become more fluent, can have classes focused on improving their oral production. The classes will include role-playing of different situations, relevant for the students, who will also prepare and make presentations related to their areas of interest and in-line with the course objective.
All regular courses include practicing all communication skills: speaking, reading, writing, and listening, helping students to generally improve their language performance.
